Clean Car Campaign Organizational Allies

Does your organization agree that cars should operate more efficiently and be manufactured more cleanly? We invite your organization to become an allied member of the Clean Car Campaign to promote an evolution in the motor vehicle industry[Click here to sign up]. Success will bring to market autos that are many times greener than today's in their production, use, and end-of-life disposal.

To join, we ask only that your organization endorse the campaign's Clean Car Standard and commit to collect pledges for our Clean Car Pledge. The purpose is to amass pledges from potential consumers and fleet buyers willing to consider purchasing vehicles that meet our Clean Car Standards, at a reasonable cost and without sacrificing safety and practicality.

The Clean Car Pledge challenges automakers to produce and market vehicles that:

(1) are 50% more fuel efficient than other vehicles in their class;
(2) meet California's stringent tailpipe emission standards (SULEV); and
(3) are cleanly manufactured with non-toxic recyclable materials.

Several automakers are expected to offer vehicles next year that may come close to meeting the Campaign's standard.

While we expect the campaign to lead to actual purchases of more environmentally friendly vehicles in the near-term, these standards challenge automakers to design and offer vehicles, which incorporate the best environmental practices from this global industry.

We also intend to use the pledges in supporting effective public policies that help to move the auto industry in a greener direction. Passing strong Tier 2 auto emission standards, strengthening federal fuel economy requirements, and preserving California's Zero Emission Vehicle program are all key policies that will need support over the next year. The Clean Car Campaign intends to compliment a wide variety of efforts to combat global warming, reduce toxics, and promote a more sensible transportation system.

In order to be successful in our efforts, however, we need your support! Our goals for the Pledge include broadening our support base of organizations and collecting thousands of pledges each year. Help us send a message to the automakers that green vehicles are not pie-in-the-sky!

Organizations can support the Clean Car Campaign in several ways:

Sign your group on as an "ally" of the Clean Car Campaign (go to fax-back form).
Send an email alert to your members about the Pledge to help build momentum for the Campaign before the Detroit Auto Show in January.
Help us to collect individual pledges by promoting the Campaign's website or publishing pledge materials in your organization's publications (go to sample newsletter article).
Convince local municipal or commercial fleet purchasers to adopt the Campaign. (We can supply materials that specifically address fleet concerns.)
Have your organization pass a resolution in support of the Clean Car Campaign (go to sample resolution).
Provide a link to the Clean Car Campaign on your organization's website.
Send us the names of three additional organizations that would support the Clean Car Campaign.

Each allied organization is expected to take at least one action to present the Clean Car Pledge to its members. It could be as simple as putting an article in a membership newsletter, or sending an alert to your activist members. As an allied member of the Campaign, your organization's name will be added to the Clean Car Campaign web site.

The Clean Car Campaign is a collaboration of organizations working to promote a profound transformation of the motor vehicle industry toward products many times greener than today's in their production, use, and end-of-life disposition.
