Support Clean Car Provisions in Senate Energy Bill

March 8, 2002

Dear Clean Car Campaign Supporter,

The U.S. Senate has begun debate on an energy bill and we need your immediate help to ensure strong provisions favoring cleaner, more fuel-efficient vehicles. Take action! Urge your Senators to vote to significantly raise fuel economy standards, and to create consumer tax credits for advanced technology vehicles.

Thanks to letters from hundreds of Clean Car Pledge signers in Michigan, Senator Levin ceased his efforts to eliminate tailpipe pollution safeguards from the tax credit bill. This helped the Senate Finance Committee pass a solid version of the bill in February with real environmental safeguards and strong fuel efficiency incentives. Congratulations, and keep up the good work!

Urge the Senate to take a stand in support of cleaner, more fuel-efficient vehicles.

Sincerely,

The Clean Car Campaign

The U.S. Senate will soon vote on a bill to guide our nation's energy policy. I urge you to support provisions in energy legislation that promote fuel-efficient, cleaner vehicles. Transportation is responsible for two-thirds of U.S. oil consumption, the majority of this from passenger vehicles, so our energy security is at stake along with our environment.

In particular, I urge you to vote to increase the fuel-economy standard for cars and light trucks to a modest 35 miles per gallon by 2013, and to provide consumer tax credits for highly fuel-efficient and cleaner advanced technology vehicles. These two provisions will work together to save over 2.5 million barrels of oil a day by 2020 - more oil than we currently import from the Persian Gulf - while meeting the needs of consumers for safe, affordable and practical vehicles. This will help curb global warming by reducing oil consumption and millions of tons of carbon dioxide emissions, and will save consumers billions of dollars in fuel costs.

These provisions cut greenhouse gases without backsliding on tailpipe pollution reduction, and no such trade-off in environmental benefits should be considered. Please reject any proposals to loosen tailpipe standards. Also, please do not make the same mistake made by the U.S. House of Representatives last year when it passed an energy bill that included a misleading and toothless fuel economy provision, and advanced vehicle tax credits that did not protect air quality in exchange for public dollars. The Kerry/Hollings fuel economy proposal and the Senate Finance Committee version of advanced vehicle tax credits are worthy of your support.
